The spectacular landscapes of Mayoyao
Words and photos by Elmer Cabotage

In 1995, five rice terrace clusters in four municipalities of the province of Ifugao were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Dubbed as a "Living Cultural Heritage Site," these rice terraces express and conserve the harmony between the environment and its indigenous people.

The Ifugao rice terraces include the terrace clusters of Batad and Bangaan in Banaue, Nagacadan in Kiangan, the terrace cluster in the municipality of Hungduan, and the Mayoyao central cluster. Of the five, Mayoyao is the least accessible from Banaue, making it all the more appealing for backpackers and adventurers to visit the place.

A lot of patience
"Grueling" best describes our 17-hour bus ride to Mayoyao, which is best accessed through Santiago City, Isabela. No wonder we were advised to bring a book, a pillow, and a lot of patience! After traveling practically the whole day, we checked in at the Mayoyao Hostel to rest our sore bodies and prepare for the next day's adventure.

After a hearty breakfast, we met with the local tourism officer, Robert Pinalgan, one of the few Department of Tourism-accredited guides in the municipality. Our first activity was a short trek to the historical marker on Mt. Nagchajan, site of the battle between the retreating Japanese and the combined Filipino and American soldiers during World War II. Locals who have explored the mountain peak reported seeing several stone-walled trenches and foxholes, rusty shells, and machine guns.

Microsoft slashing up to 5,000 jobs

Company says it can't accurately forecast earnings for next six months

Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that it planned to cut thousands of jobs because of the current recession, in a move that underscores the difficulty even some of the most stable U.S. companies are having in dealing with these hard economic times.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker announced the job cuts Thursday as it released lower-than-expected quarterly earnings. In a highly unusual step, the company also said conditions were so uncertain that it could not accurately forecast its earnings and revenue for the coming six months.

Microsoft executives could only say that they didn’t expect conditions to improve soon for the company or for the economy.

Philippines fears 60,000 IT job losses after Intel shutdown

MANILA (AFP) — Up to 60,000 jobs could be lost in the Philippines' key electronics sector after Intel Corp. shut a facility and Texas Instruments announced a number of lay-offs, an official said Thursday.

Intel, the world's biggest computer chip maker, announced plans Wednesday to close plants in Malaysia, the Philippines and the United States, with the loss of 1,800 jobs in its assembly test facility in Cavite province south of Manila.

Texas Instruments, another big US player in the sector, told the government last month it was laying off 400 workers from its semiconductor factory in the northern resort town of Baguio due to the global financial crisis.

The cuts highlight the poor state of the electronics industry and could be the beginning of a wave of job losses in the sector.

"The impact of the economic downturn on our business was more severe than we anticipated and the outlook is uncertain," Intel Philippines said in a statement explaining the closure of its facility.

The laid-off employees "will be offered a severance package," and various "transition services" the company statement said without giving details.

Intel was once one of the biggest exporters in the Philippines and one of the first to set up semiconductor manufacturing facilities in there 35 years ago, investing about a billion dollars over that time, according to its website.

"The semiconductor industry is already getting hit," Labour Secretary Marianito Roque told ABS-CBN television in an interview.

"We have seen this as early as three months ago," he said.

"We expected that we'll be getting hit in the first semester of this year," he added.

Roque said the government is giving counselling and retraining to "about 60,000 workers that could be affected nationwide".

The labour department is "getting daily notices now not only of retrenchments but on the reduction of work shifts, reduction of working hours, and compression of the work week," he said.

Plants employing 19,000 people have so far reduced shifts or working hours, he added but did not say how many had been laid off.

"We have to admit that this is not business as usual in the Philippines for the electronics sector and in the garments sector as well," Roque said.

"These will be the two particular areas that would be affected by the global financial crisis."

The electronics sector accounts for about 70 percent of the Philippines' exports and employs 480,000 workers.

Roque said Manila expects the business process outsourcing sector to take up some of the slack, with a "nominal growth" in the call centre industry creating about 130,000 jobs this year.

The Philippines also hopes to send its workers to "hotel jobs in Bulgaria and even manufacturing jobs also in some countries like Australia."

Two French soldiers survived the Saturday night crash, the agency said.

French Defense Minister Herve Morin arrived in Gabon's capital of Libreville on Sunday and met with President Omar Bongo to coordinate recovery efforts for the body of one of the seven soldiers whose remains had not been found.

According to the French minister, "the cause of this tragedy remains unknown. It may be natural or human, or a combination of both."

Divers were inspecting the helicopter, which was in water 35 meters (about 115 feet) deep, Morin said.

French forces were in the former French colony for maritime security exercises with Gabonese soldiers when the incident happened.

Flirt-Express now accepting passengers from 10 major German cities for its second year of heart service.

Flirt-Express extends their service to all German singles on this Valentines season. Singles and lonely hearts will now have a chance to ride on the Flirt-Express train and meet their potential love partner for life at the same time each of the passengers will experience the best ride during Valentines Day. The flirt-express train departs from 10 major German cities on the night of February 13. Singles will ride the rails for the “nationwide flirt” hoping to meet a new potential lover and sweetheart every five minutes. If two hearts felt that they are strucked by cupid’s arrow during the Flirt-Express ride, they can decide to exchange personal details and extend their meeting further.

By the time the train pulls back into the station, there is a party for everyone. Successful couples, lonely hearts, singles and those who failed to meet a special someone in the Flirt-Express will have another chance to continue flirting “to their heart’s content.”

Flirt-Express is basically a speed-dating service with a twist during Valentine’s Day and Valentine’s Eve. Flirt-Express dating service for singles is now on its second year of service. It was very popular last year that it reached over 5,000 singles registered knowing only 800 seats were offered.

Speed dating is a form of matchmaking process or dating system. The purpose of speed dating is to encourage people to meet a large number of new people. Its origins are credited to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish HaTorah, originally as a way to help Jewish singles meet and marry. “SpeedDating”, as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. “Speed dating”, as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events.

The first speed-dating event took place at Pete’s Café in Beverly Hills in late 1998. Soon afterward, several commercial services began offering secular round-robin dating events across the United States.

Flirt-Express is one of speed-dating service with an excellent and unique love ride. Now, I want to ask you. What do you think of Flirt Express speed dating service?

  • Everyone on board was accounted for and alive, officials said. About 15 people were being treated at hospitals and others were being evaluated at triage centers.

Flight 1549, headed to Charlotte, North Carolina, was airborne less than three minutes, according to FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown.

The pilot radioed to air traffic controllers that he had experienced a bird strike and declared an emergency, a New Jersey State Police source said.

Sources identified the pilot as Chelsey B. "Sully" Sullenberger.

"I think a lot of people started praying and just collecting themselves," said passenger Fred Berretta. "It was quite stunning."

The San Mateo "PADYAKAN LABAN SA TAMBAKAN"

A sequel to the previous FREE RIDE for FREE DUMPsites held last Dec.
27, 2008 which gathered 300++ concerned cycling advocates who took an
environmentally fellowship bike ride around the town of San Mateo to
announce to the general San Mateo residents that a gigantic dumpsite
is about to destroy and diminish their town into a massive heap of
garbage much like Payatas and Smokey Mountain. Along with it would be
our beloved Maarat trail which we enjoy riding freely in wooded fire
    trails and forests during weekends.

From our previous experience last Dec. 27th's advocacy ride we have
seen a great effect in terms of its environmental awareness campaign
done by all cyclists who joined. This coming Saturday, January 17th at
the Aling Tinas Cycling Station and Resto, we shall now be joined by
international environmental and eco-waste experts such as Green Peace
and the Eco- Waste Council as well as the media who will join our

    forest's Bgy Maly and Guinang.
